Mark Pavelich’s 76 points remains a New York Rangers rookie record. His five goals in an NHL game stands as just the second time an American has achieved that feat. But Pavelich’s biggest accomplishment on ice plays as the biggest accomplishment on ice.
The 1980 Olympic gold medalist for the US hockey team seeks to auction off his hard-to-come-by hardware. The Minneapolis Star-Tribune reports that online bids start at $62,500 next Friday. Bidding ends on May 16. The auction house peddling Pavelich’s medal sold one once worn by Pavelich teammate Mark Wells for $310,700 four years ago.
Mike Eruzione, the man who scored the winning goal on a Pavelich assist in the semifinal game against the Soviet Union, supported his teammate’s decision but told the paper: “I will never sell my medal as long as I’m alive.”
