Albert Pujols hit his 500th home run yesterday. Tom Sherrill caught it. And though the Angels pay millions for Pujols to hit home runs, Sherrill doesn’t want a dime for catching this very significant one.
As his San Diego Chargers shirt suggests, the lucky fan is a local. Sherrill, a member of the Air Force stationed in Colorado, hails from Pomona, California. He told a Fox Sports West interviewer that he wouldn’t refuse anything the Angels gave him for the ball, but that he planned to give it to Albert Pujols without bartering because the player probably values the it more than he does.
Home-run balls can command massive bids at auction. The ball that broke Hank Aaron’s home-run record, for instance, sold for $752,467 at auction. Alas, 500 home runs isn’t what it used to be. Pujols became the 26th player, and third youngest, to reach the milestone.
