Jon Jones Retains UFC Light Heavyweight Championship in Victory over Glover Teixeira

Glover Teixiera had won twenty fights in a row before taking on Jon Jones in Baltimore. But he couldn’t win a single round against the UFC’s light heavyweight champion.

Jon Jones retained his belt with a diverse onslaught of punches, kicks, elbows, knees, and even a takedown against the heavy-handed Brazilian. Jones opened up a cut near Teixeira’s eye in the third round that gushed after rounds four and five. Though Jones may have never had Teixeira hurt, he never appeared in danger of losing the five-round fight, either. All three judges scored the fight for Jones 50-45.

Teixeira drops to 22-3 while Jones improves to 20-1, with the sole loss coming via disqualification in a fight he dominated. The 26-year-old champion, who boasts seven title defenses against a murderer’s row of opponents, looks forward to a rematch with Alexander Gustafsson, his toughest challenge to date, and perhaps the winner of May’s Daniel Cormier-Dan Henderson scrap.

Anthony Johnson announced his return to the UFC in a loud way by defeating light-heavyweight contender Phil Davis in the co-feature. Rumble, who has seven straight wins since his debacle on the scales and in the octagon against Vitor Belfort in 2012, looks increasingly like a legitimate foe for Jones. Middleweight Luke Rockhold made quick work of Tim Boetsch with a first-round submission via kimura. Jim Miller and Takinori Gomi also posted wins on the Baltimore Arena pay-per-view card.
