Serena Williams Loses in Second Round at French Open to Garbine Muguruza

World #1 and defending champion Serena Williams lost to Garbiñe Muguruza 6-2, 6-2 at the 2014 Roland Garros French Open. It was a match that Williams never had control of and never won a point from the net.

There were a few moments of brilliance, but as more clouds moved in, Williams’ play matched the sky. The wind was swirling on the court and she did not feel comfortable on the serve. Her frustration showed and spectators could tell the match was getting inside her head. Williams again played as her own worst enemy, showing that once she loses control it is hard for her to gain it back. The Roland Garros Twitter account posted pictures during the match.

Muguruza took advantage of Williams downward spiral and stayed on top. She did not get cocky about being ahead of the world #1 and fought hard to the very last point. In the second set in one game, Williams was up 40-0, but Muguruza quickly turned and won the point only going to one deuce.

The crowd gave Muguzura a well-deserved standing ovation and Williams graciously congratulated her.

Williams’ older sister Venus lost right before to Anna Schiedlova 2-6, 6-3, 6-4.
