Novak Djokovic, #2, Ernests Gulbis, #18 Advance to French Open Semi-Finals

Novak Djokovic will face off against Ernests Gulbis in the 2014 Roland Garros French Open semi-final after both defeated their opponents in straight sets on Tuesday afternoon.

Djokovic defeated #8 Milos Raonic 7-5, 7-6, 6-4. The most impressive stat of the match by far is Raonic’s aces. He had 21 total and the lowest was six in the third set while Djokovic had four total. Even though he had great control over his own serves he could not break Djokovic’s serve and only broke him once. The deciding factor, though, were the pesky unforced errors. Raonic committed 40 unforced errors while Djokovic only had 19.

Djokovic only needs the French Open to complete his career Grand Slam. He made it to the finals in 2012 and lost to Rafael Nadal. In 2013, he faced Nadal in the semi-finals for one of the most exciting matches in recent tennis history. Nadal might be the King of Clay, but Djokovic has a better clay record in 2014 and has a great chance to win it this year.

However, he has to face Gulbis, who defeated #4 Roger Federer in the fourth round and beat #6 Tomas Berdych easily 6-3, 6-2, 6-4. While Raonic was able to keep up with Djokovic, Gulbis completely owned the match against Berdych. Berdych looked off his game and played with hardly any confidence. Gulbis won all of his net points and won 5 out 8 break points.

On Wednesdy, #23 Gael Monfils plays against #7 Andy Murray and #1 Rafael Nadal faces off against #5 David Ferrer. The Nadal-Ferrer match is a repeat of 2013’s French Open final won by Nadal.

Earlier on Tuesday, #7 Maria Sharapova and #18 Eugenie Bouchard advanced to the semi-finals.
