2014 French Open: #7 Maria Sharapova, #18 Eugenie Bouchard Advance to Semi-Finals

One bracket in the 2014 Roland Garros French Open Women’s semi-finals is set! #7 Maria Sharapova will face #18 Eugenie Bouchard even though both had major scares during their quarterfinals.

Sharapova defeated Garbine Muguruza 1-6, 7-5, 6-1. The first set was downright awful for Sharapova and she did not look like herself. She was down 0-4 before she finally won a game. She did not win any net or break points, committed 13 unforced errors, and had four double faults. Muguruza, on the other hand, played extremely composed and did not make many mistakes. In fact, she looked like the multi-champion winner instead of Sharapova.

That all changed during the second set. Muguruza started strong, but Sharapova found her groove and returned to form. She had two aces and both net points while Muguruza committed three double faults and 19 unforced errors. The third set was all Sharapova. Muguruza committed 26 unforced errors compares to Sharapova’s five and she did not break Sharapova once.

But Muguruza’s finish should not tarnish her image. The 20-year-old defeated defending champion #1 seeded Serena Williams in the second round, 6-2, 6-2 and she was brilliant half of this match against Sharapova. She will be a threat in the future.

Bouchard advanced to her second straight Grand Slam semi-final after she defeated Carla Suarez Navarro 7-6, 2-6, 7-5. She had to fight back in her match just like Sharapova. It took her 60 minutes to win the first set and completely fell apart in the second set. It looked like Navarro was going to win the third set since she went up 4-1, but Bouchard came roaring back and won despite committing 10 unforced errors and was broken two times.

On Wednesday, #27 Svetlana Kuznetsova will play against #4 Simona Halep and #10 Sara Errani will face #28 Andrea Petkovic.
