Defending Wimbledon champion Andy Murray finally hired a new coach, but she is only for the grass court season. Yes, I said SHE. Murray hired 2006 Wimbledon champion Amelie Mauresmo.
Mauresmo coached Michael Llodra, but it will be the first time in history a player as prominent as Murray has a female coach. Murray released this statement with the announcement:
“I’m excited by the possibilities of the new partnership and Amelie is someone I have always looked up to and admired,” he said. “She faced adversity plenty of times in her career, but was an amazing player and won major titles, including Wimbledon.”
It is a new trend to hire former greats as coaches. Roger Federer hired Stefan Edberg and Boris Becker coaches Novak Djokovic. Murray will hold onto the rest of his coaching staff, which includes Dani Vallverdu as assistant coach.
The four majors are important, but Wimbledon is special to Murray. In 2012, he was the first British male to make the Wimbledon final since Henry “Bunny” Austin in 1938. In 2013, he was the first British male to win Wimbledon since Fred Perry in 1936. Murray advanced to the semi-finals at the 2014 Roland Garros French Open, but lost to Rafael Nadal in a very mediocre and lifeless match.
Mauresmo is in London with Murray to prepare for Wimbledon, which begins on June 23. He wants to defend his Queen’s title by winning the Aegon Championships and Wimbledon.
