Colombia fans have decided to skip a presidential election to travel to Brazil for their country’s game against Greece on Saturday. It is Colombia’s first World Cup since 1998.
“I’m sorry, but the World Cup beats elections any day!” said Guillermo Barrera, 33.
“It’s an election where every vote counts because the candidates are so close. I’d like to vote, but I had to choose: my democratic right or see the game. I voted for football!” explained Jose-Luis Londono, 29.
The election is scheduled for Sunday between President Juan Manuel Santos and Oscar Ivan Zuluaga and the polls are extremely close. Londono told Reuters he would vote for Santos, but his traveling companion would vote for Zuluaga, “thus cancelling each other out.”
There are others who do not care and do not want to vote for either candidate.
“I don’t believe in our democracy,” Colombian Nicolas Luna confessed. “They both have done wrong in the past. So I’m not worried about not voting. I can party in peace on Saturday when we beat Greece, I won’t be thinking about the election.”
