Fat Golfers of the World Unite, You Have Nothing to Lose But Your Weight

Do these argyle pants make me look fat?

The United States Golf Association (USGA) grouped Kevin Stadler, Brendon de Jonge, and Shane Lowry together for a trio Thursday afternoon at the US Open. Tipping the scales at a combined weight of 705 pounds, the three-man tag team didn’t sit well with two of the members.

“When I saw it, I was pretty annoyed,” Lowry told the Golf Channel. “I think it’s very cheeky of the USGA to do what they’ve done. I don’t think it’s fair to the three of us. It’s a mockery, to be honest.”

Stadler, too, took exception. The 230-pound de Jonge, on the other hand, says that he found it amusing. His play didn’t seem influenced by the insult. He shot a 68 to put him three behind leader Martin Kaymer.

The USGA has a history of putting golfers together in themed trios. Unlike the Masters, the US Open embraces a carefree, some might say lighter, approach and refuses to allow the heaviness of tradition to weigh down the fun.
