Richard Gasquet, Gael Monfils Stunned at Wimbledon by Young Players
LONDON - More upstarts defeated seeded players at Wimbledon Thursday. Thirteenth seed Richard Gasquet fell along with 24 seed Gael Monfils in the second round.
The 19-year-old wildcard Nick Kyrgios from Australia beat Gasquet 3-6, 6-7(4), 6-4, 7-5, 10-8 on Court Two. Gasquet easily won the first set and did not allow Kyrgios to break him, but his luck ran out shortly thereafter. Even though Gasquet won the second set, he struggled while Kyrgios flourished.
Overcoming the errors served as the key to Kyrgios’ victory. He had a total of 44, but managed to win despite them. He won the majority of his net points and broke Gasquet. At the same time, Kyrgios fought off break points or did not lose his serve in the sets.
Monfils was also defeated by a young man as former junior champion Jiri Vesely won in five sets 7-6(7), 6-3, 6-7(7), 6-7(7), 6-4. Monfils fought harder than Gasquet, but Vesely did not struggle. The match played incredibly close as three sets went to tiebreak. The main difference was Veseley’s ability to break Monfils and win at the net.
Kyrgios and Vesely will play each other in the third round.
