Joe Gibbs Supports Redskins Name

Joe Gibbs, the former Washington Redskins coach who took the team to three Super Bowl wins, said the Redskins name has always been prideful.

“I grew up in North Carolina and the only games we could get on TV in the late ’40s was the Redskins,” he said Saturday at Kentucky Speedway, according to USA Today. “I pulled for them my whole life. The whole time I was there — 15 years — never once did I hear anybody say anything negative about the name Redskins.”

Gibbs made his remarks after the United States Patent and Trademark office revoked the Redskins trademark and as pressure has increased on the team to change their name. Gibbs now is deeply involved in NASCAR with his team, Joe Gibbs Racing.
