Barbora Zahlavova Strycova Shocks Caroline Wozniacki at Wimbledon

LONDON–Barbora Zahlavova Strycova continues to defeat top seeds at Wimbledon. She eliminated sixteenth-seed Caroline Wozniacki in straight sets, 6-2, 7-5 on Monday.

The first set was all Strycova. She broke Wozniacki two out of four times and won 85% of her net points. Strycova went up 3-1 in the second set before Wozniacki started to show life. She finally broke Strycova’s serve and played better at the net.

“It was a tough one,” Wozniacki said after the match. “She’s a little bit of a different player to play. You know there was no rhythm out there and I didn’t serve as well as I have earlier on in the tournament. Even when I had the opportunity I made stupid mistakes.”

It almost appeared Wozniacki would force a third set as she fought off five of Strycova’s match points. But Wozniacki double faulted at deuce, which gave Strycova the advantage and the sixth match point. Strycova won when Wozniacki let loose on a backhand and the ball went out. This is Strycova’s first trip to the quarterfinals in a grand slam.

“It’s great!” she said. “It’s unbelievable. I put a lot of work into it and I knew I could always play well on grass.”
