Simona Halep, Sabine Lisicki Advance to Wimbledon Quarterfinals

LONDON, United Kingdom – Wimbledon’s 2013 runner-up will face French Open’s 2013 runner-up in the quarterfinals. Simona Halep and Sabine Lisicki advanced at Wimbledon early Tuesday morning.

Halep enjoyed an easy match against Zarina Diyas 6-3, 6-0. She broke Diyas five out of eight times and won all of her net points. Halep is the only top-five seed left in the women’s draw after Maria Sharapova was beaten on Tuesday afternoon. She reached the quarterfinals in all three Grand Slams and is only the second Romanian woman to reach the quarterfinals at Wimbledon. The other is Virginia Ruzici, who is Halep’s manager.

Lisicki had a semi-easier time when she defeated Yaroslava Shvedova 6-3, 3-6, 6-4. Despite the win, she had 20 double faults. She was able to power back in third set by winning 80% of her net points and broke Shvedova three out of six times. Shvedova broke Lisicki when she was serving for the match at 5-3, but in turn broke Shvedova to win the match.

Lisicki nursed her shoulder during the match and told reporters she will receive treatment.
