Simona Halep, Eugenie Bouchard Advance to Wimbledon Semifinals

LONDON, United Kingdom–Third-seed Simona Halep will face thirteenth-seed Eugenie Buchard in the 2014 Wimbledon semifinals. They both advanced on Wednesday.

Halep, the 2014 French Open runner-up, started off slow against Sabine Lisicki, 2013 Wimbledon’s runner-up. Lisicki broke her to go up 2-0 in the first set and expanded her lead to 3-0. Halep answered with a set, but Lisicki rushed back. However, the 4-1 lead was the last time Lisicki even won a game. Halep remained in control and forced Lisicki all over the court. In the end, Lisicki committed 11 unforced errors in the second set and was broken three out of four times.

Bouchard is off to her third straight Grand Slam semi-final in 2014. She lost to Maria Sharapova at the French Open, who ended up winning the tournament. Her flight to the semi-finals was slightly harder than Halep’s and she defeated Angelique Kerber 6-3, 6-4. It appeared Kerber did not fully recover from her defeat of Maria Sharapova on Tuesday; she was sluggish and could not keep up with Bouchard. Recovering well from mistakes and unforced errors allowed Bouchard triumph over Kerber.

On Tuesday night, Petra Kvitova and Lucie Safarova advanved to the semi-finals. Both ladies are from the Czech Republic.
