After accusing Republicans of opposing him and President Barack Obama due to “racial animus,” Attorney General Eric Holder on Sunday said the “offensive” Washington Redskins name should be changed.
“I think the name ought to be changed,” Holder said on ABC’s This Week. “I think it is an offensive name. And the Redskins are … a team with a storied history that has huge amounts of support in Washington, D.C. And I think in the 21st Century, they could increase their fan base, increase their level of support if they did something that is so, from my perspective, so obviously right.”
In a split decision, the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office’s Appeal Board recently stripped the Redskins of its trademark, and the Redskins immediately appealed that ruling. Democrats in Congress have written NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell to force a name change. And President Barack Obama even chimed in, saying that if he owned the Redskins he would have to consider changing the team’s name.
