By George! Joe Torre Forgets Old Boss in Hall of Fame Speech

Joe Torre spoke for nearly triple his allotted time at the Baseball Hall of Fame on Sunday. He still forgot to thank his old boss.

Torre thanked bench coach Don Zimmer. He thanked Yankees fans. But he forgot to express appreciation to the late George Steinbrenner, the longtime owner of the New York Yankees.

Recognizing his mistake, the 74-year-old former Yankees manager shouted to his fellow inductees: “I forgot George!”

Greg Maddux, known for his control, spoke for the ten minutes the Hall of Fame honchos set as guideline, as did Bobby Cox. Tony La Russa, Tom Glavine, and Frank Thomas spoke for more than fifteen. Torre, who managed the Yankees to four World Series triumphs in twelve seasons in the Bronx, spoke for 28 minutes.

Steinbrenner died in 2010, nearly three years after his breakup with Torre, who was one of three managers earning honors in Cooperstown on Sunday.
