Derek Jeter Passes Yaz on Hit List; Honus Wagner Next

Captain Clutch passed Captain Carl on Monday night.

Derek Jeter went 3-4 against Yu Darvish to bring his hit total to 3,420. That’s good for sole possession of seventh on the all-time list. The solid night in a losing effort put Jeter one hit ahead of Carl Yastrzemski, who, like Jeter, spent all of his major-league playing days in one uniform.

Jeter looks to pass Honus Wagner (3,430) in the next week or two. There, at six, Jeter looks likely to stay. Tris Speaker, boasting 3,514 hits, looks out of reach for a man with two months ticking on his career.

Brett Gardner continued his tear against Texas ace Darvish, hitting two home runs and a double. Despite the production out of the first two spots in the line-up, the Yankees put up just two runs on the night. They dropped the game at Globe Life Park to the Rangers 4-2.

“It’s quite an accomplishment,” Jeter explained after the game. “It’s tough to enjoy it when we lost the game, but I’m pretty sure when this season’s over and done with, I’ll look back and get a chance to realize how special it is. Any time you talk about a list of all-time great players, it’s pretty special.”
