Cardinals Obtain John Lackey

The Boston Red Sox continued their fire sale of last year’s World Series champions in the hours before the trade deadline.

The BoSox sent pitcher John Lackey to the St. Louis Cardinals. The righty owns an 11-6 record with a 3.60 ERA this season. Because of Lackey’s lost 2012 season, a contract stipulation means the solid starter could pitch for just $500,000 in 2015 if St. Louis picks up the option.

At 56-50, the Cardinals find themselves in 3rd in the NL Central. They hope Lackey can provide the boost to their starting rotation to send the team back to the World Series.

In return for Lackey, the Red Sox received struggling outfielder Allen Craig and righty starter Joe Kelly.

Earlier Thursday, the Red Sox shipped Lackey’s chicken-and-beer buddy Jon Lester to Oakland along with Jonny Gomes.
