Call Him Speedy: NFL Suspends Wes Welker

Wes Welker relies on quickness. Does he also rely on speed?

The NFL has suspended the slot receiver four games for amphetamine use. Welker suffered his third concussion in the last year during a preseason game against the Houston Texans. His status for the Broncos-Colts Sunday Night Football game had been a question. The suspension definitively answers it.

Welker’s departure for a quarter of the regular season puts Peyton Manning in a bit of a bind. Eric Decker’s signing with the Jets coupled with the Welker suspension takes away more than 2,000 yards of offense from Denver. The depth enjoyed by the Broncos at the position–Demaryius Thomas and Julius Thomas combined for 232 receptions last year–and Manning’s ability to transform average receivers into great receivers may partly soften the blow.
