One of the biggest busts in NFL history just got busted–again. Kinda. Sorta.
A Texas court sentenced Ryan Leaf to five years in prison for violating his probation terms. The second pick in the 1998 draft–right behind a guy named Peyton Manning–broke into a Montana home and stole prescription drugs several years ago. He offered a guilty plea in 2012. He copped to several charges involving prescription drugs in 2010 in Texas, which put him on probation.
Since he has been wasting in a Montana jail for the last several years, Texas will likely give the former Washington State University signal caller credit for time served. Leaf likely won’t face any additional time.
Leaf has been granted parole in the Big Sky State. But he’s still looking up at the concrete ceiling. The 38-year-old expects release from the clink shortly.
In other words, a paroled but imprisoned Ryan Leaf has been sentenced to prison but won’t have to go.
Leaf suffered through four NFL seasons, seeing time with the San Diego Chargers and Dallas Cowboys. He threw 14 touchdowns to 36 interceptions, amassing 3,666 yards and registering a career QB rating of 50.0.
