Caroline Wozniacki opened up about the abrupt ending to her relationship with Rory McIlroy, admitting that the world’s number-one golfer breaking up with her over a ten-minute phone call rather than in person left her “shocked.”
“I thought at least I would get a face-to-face or something, but there was nothing,” said the ninth-ranked women’s tennis player. “It was just a phone call, and then I did not hear from him again.” In May the International Business Times reported that the phone call lasted only three minutes.
Appearing on In Depth with Graham Bensinger and reported by Golf.com, Wozniacki added that after the first five minutes of the phone call, she thought McIlroy was joking with her. Making matters worse, McIlroy and Wozniacki had spent time together during the day, and he did not share his feelings with her then. It was later in the day that she received his phone call.
Fresh from her runner-up performance at this year’s U.S. Open, Wozniacki told Bensinger that she is closing this chapter of her life and “I’m in such a great place. I’m so happy… I have good things going on.”
ESPN commentator Chris Evert characterized the dramatic episode as a positive for Wozniacki: “It’s almost like it released something in her. She’s playing with more fearlessness and with more boldness…. She is so comfortable in her own skin.”
The Denmark-born tennis player, who now lives in Monte Carlo, sees the positive side of the breakup as well. “I would like a taller guy,” she quipped, “so I can wear my heels.”
