Jameis Winston Back on the Field

Jameis Winston Back on the Field

Jameis Winston lost his position on the field against Clemson this weekend. Florida State nearly lost its top position in the rankings because of it.

The Heisman Trophy-winning quarterback returns to team activities with the Seminoles today. He received a suspension last week–bumped from a half to a full game on Friday–for yelling a vulgar phrase in Florida State’s student union. The incident joined a rape allegation last year, a citation for stealing crab legs in April, and a police investigation into a BB-gun battle Winston allegedly partook in that resulted in thirteen broken windows.

“At the end of the day we felt like the one game made the most sense, and I chose to keep that process internal,”Florida State head coach Jimbo Fisher explained. “Now he’s served that punishment and he’s ready to move forward. You never know the pace kids learn or why they make mistakes, but I hope and believe Jameis will learn from this and use better judgment and his language and decision making and respect for everything will continue to grow.”

The Florida State head coach said Winston strangely suited up for Saturday night’s game “because he loves his teammates.” After an exchange with Fisher, Winston returned to the locker room and changed into street clothes. Florida State beat Clemson in overtime 23-17.

“I don’t know,” Fisher said of the pregame incident to reporters, “and we corrected that–put him back in. He wanted to be with his teammates.”

The Seminoles travel to Raleigh to take on North Carolina State on Saturday.
