Astros Hire Manager

The Houston Astros hired A.J. Hinch as the team’s new manager on Monday.

“I am extremely excited to bring in A.J. as our new manager,” general manager Jeff Luhnow said in a release. “Throughout our process, we searched for a person with previous Major League experience, who could effectively lead our young, growing nucleus of talented players. I have no doubt that A.J. is the right person to do that. He brings experience as a Major League player, Major League manager and player development executive. His skillsets and leadership abilities will be enormous assets in our clubhouse and to our entire organization.”

Hinch, a member of the 1996 U.S. Olympic baseball team, previously managed the Arizona Diamondbacks. The Astros fired Bo Porter a month ago. Hinch replaces interim manager Tom Lawless.

The Astros finished the season in fourth place at 70-92. The season marked the first since 2010 in which the club did not finish last.
