Is that the orange uniform issued by the Denver Broncos or the Arapahoe County Sheriff’s Department?

The Denver Broncos released practice-squad safety John Boyett after a bizarre series of events Wednesday morning that culminated in his arrest.

The Colts cut Boyett, their 2013 sixth-round draft pick, last year after an alcohol-related arrest in Indianapolis. The former Oregon Ducks defensive back had made the team’s opening-day roster before the incident derailed his NFL dream.

According to the Denver Post, the Sports Book Bar & Grill in Greenwood Village, Colorado, asked Boyett to leave after the defensive back ate food off the plate of another patron, threatened to punch the bartender, and refused to close his tab. The barkeep called the cops, who called the player a cab. A few minutes later, the taxi driver called the cops alleging that Boyett had head-butted and punched him.

The Arapahoe County Sheriff’s Department alleges that Boyett stole a shovel from a construction site and attempted to hide by burying himself in mulch. The police brandished but did not use their Tasers upon the mulchy man. Upon his arrest, Boyett allegedly instructed the cops to call John Elway. He traveled to the station spitting and slamming his head into the cruiser’s window, police say.

Alcohol’s a helluva drug.
