White House: Senate Dems Voting Down President's Plan 'Political Games'

White House Press Secretary Jay Carney: “I understand that there’s a lot of — this is the kind of political games that aren’t serious. That it is absolutely the case that we need to have a serious negotiation about a serious issue, spending cuts and the like, that will require compromise.”

Q: “Why is it a game to put the President’s plan on the floor? Do you think you have Democratic support?”

Carney: “We know that — and filibuster is certainly an issue here — we don’t have 60 votes in the Senate. I would not argue with the idea that the President’s proposal cannot, at this time, or has not at this time, garnered Republican support. That’s what this debate is about. We are very confident that the Democrats support the principle that we need to have $1.6 trillion in revenue, asking the wealthy to pay more is part of a balanced package that the President has put forward.”
