LA Police Chief Announces Plan For Random Patrols Of Elementary, Middle Schools

(AP) Los Angeles’ police chief says he plans to step up patrol of the city’s elementary and middle schools by assigning officers to visit them at least once a day. Charlie Beck said at a speech Sunday that he wants to start the program when students in the nation’s second-largest school district return from winter break. Beck told KCAL-TV that the Los Angeles School Police department is stretched thin meeting the needs of high schools across the city. So he wants all LAPD officers to visit an elementary or middle school at least once a day. It’s part of an effort to ensure students’ safety after a shooting massacre at an elementary school in Connecticut. More than 640,000 students are enrolled at over 1,000 schools in the Los Angeles Unified School District.
