Officials: Icicle, Not Terrorist, Caused Bridge Explosion In Philly

PHILADELPHIA (AP) — Officials say an icicle broke off and hit a power line, causing an explosion under a bridge over railroad tracks in North Philadelphia.

Chief Inspector Joseph Sullivan of the city police homeland security department called it a "thermic reaction." Sullivan says there was no evidence of the presence of explosives.

The explosion left a 2-foot deep crater.

Officials say two people were hurt when debris hit their car when they were driving by.

The tracks are along the Northeast Corridor system connecting cities from Washington D.C. to Boston. Officials are checking the bridge for possible damage. 2 Feb 2013 post a comment
