Information Minister: Syria Still Viable State

Omran Al-Zoabi: The theory of foreign [military] intervention has failed for many well-known reasons. First of all, Syria is still a viable state, with its institutions, its army, and its own resources. Syria has friends and allies, as well as [Arab] supporters – at least among the peoples of the region.

Therefore, one cannot simply say that U.S. military intervention is expected, as a result of all the talk about chemical weapons and so on. This is a very serious issue with very serious consequences. The main consequence that we should be talking about is that there will be chaos and fire that will burn the entire Middle East, not just Syria.

Interviewer: But there is French pressure. There have been many statements. The French foreign minister said that France is certain that Damascus used chemical weapons…

Omran Al-Zoabi: France has been certain of a lot of things at different times… In any case, when we talk about the U.S. and Russia, there is no point in mentioning France
