Voters in California Offered Pot for Voting

Voters in today’s California election can receive free marijuana if they show they voted. KNTV reports that “nearly a dozen” dispensaries in San Jose are offering rewards to those who demonstrate they voted to try and boost turnout for pro-marijuana candidates. The Silicon Valley Cannabis Coalition, the group organizing the initiative, says that individuals who display an “I Voted” sticker or a ballot stub are eligible for free pot, and are also asked to attend a San Jose City Council meeting that will discuss medical marijuana.

The Santa Clara County district attorney’s office issued a statement declaring that “Because there are candidates for federal office on the ballot, the offer may violate 18 U.S. Code Section 597. And depending on how the offer is administered, it may violate California law.”
