Wednesday at a Senate hearing with officials from the Department of Homeland Security testifying on the influx of unaccompanied children crossing into the border states, Sen. John McCain (R-AZ) blasted U.S. Customs and Border Protection Commissioner Gil Kerlikowske for issuing a set of instructions in an attempt to block members of Congress from taking pictures and speaking to children and agents during there fact-finding trips to the strained facilities.
The Arizona lawmaker was enraged as he grilled the stunned DHS official and said, “You’re telling me I can’t even speak to staff there?”
McCain continued, “The people of Arizona elected me and I’m not supposed to even carry a cell phone with me, You have overstepped your responsibilities and your authority, Sir, and I want those instructions revoked as far as members of congress are concerned and I want it done today.”
