Return Of Jim Crow: Biden Gives Racially-Charged NAACP Speech

“This is not your fathers Republican party,” Vice President Joe Biden told the NAACP on Wednesday, pointing to the “hailstorm” of voter ID legislation.

“Grandmothers in Alabama who came up under Jim Crow” are being “stripped of their vote,” he claimed.

After the Shelby County v. Holder decision, in an attempt to curtail fraud Republican-controlled legislatures moved to pass voter ID laws. African Americans criticized the move, claiming they fear a throwback to Jim Crow style poll taxes.

Biden playing into that fear today, saying, “All these efforts are designed to keep people from voting, not to stop fraud.”

Last May Sen. Rand Paul (R-KY) said Republicans should not push for laws requiring voters to show ID, warning that they risk offending minorities.

“Everybody’s gone completely crazy on this voter ID thing,” Paul said. “I think it’s wrong for Republicans to go too crazy on this issue because it’s offending people.”
