Sessions: Amnesty Overreach Should Be Part of Boehner Lawsuit Against Obama

In an appearance on Birmingham, AL’s WAPI’s “The Matt Murphy Show,” Sen. Jeff Sessions (R-AL) was asked by host Matt Murphy about a proposal first put forth by Rep. Mo Brooks (R-AL) suggesting that House Speaker John Boehner (R-OH) make his lawsuit about violating existing immigration law as opposed to violating the provisions of the Affordable Care Act.

“[I]t’s a total overreach,” Sessions said. “Some of it’s already been done, therefore the House really – if they’re going to file a lawsuit challenging constitutional overreach, it definitely should be part of their lawsuit.”

The junior Alabama senator also urged Congress to exercise the power of the purse in preventing Obama from overstepping on amnesty.

“But Congress has certain powers,” he added. “What the House did, as I suggested and a lot of their members strongly supported was to put in language that said not one dime of federal money can be expended by the president to carry out any form of executive amnesty or work authorization to people unlawfully in the United States.”

“We do that all the time,” he added. “We barred the president from spending anymore closing the prison at Guantanamo Bay. That’s been done hundreds, thousands of times. That’s a constitutional privilege Congress has. The House has done it, so now it’s up to the Senate.”
