Wednesday after the death of Thomas Eric Duncan, a Liberian man was the first patient who developed Ebola in the U.S., the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) Director Thomas Frieden held a press conference announcing new stepped up measures for screening air travelers to West African nations effected by the outbreak.
Frieden argued travel bans were costly and not effective as he detailed the new screening procedures.
Frieden said, “Today we’re deeply saddened by the death of the patient in Dallas. Despite maximal interventions, we learned today he passed away. Our thoughts go out to his family, friends. he is a face that we associate now with Ebola.”
“Since the start of the epidemic, 3,742 patients in West Africa have been documented to have died from the disease.”
“Right now the bottom line of what we’re talking about today is that we’re stepping up protection for people coming into this country and for Americans to travel. We will continuously look at ways that we can increase the safety of Americans, and we do that at many different levels.” he added.
