Maher on Berkeley Speech: ‘I’m Planning to Come’

HBO’s “Real Time” host, Bill Maher, announced “I’m planning to come” for his commencement speech at UC-Berkeley despite protests over the speech on Friday.

Maher reacted to the controversy around his speech, saying “they invited me because it was the 50th anniversary of something that is legendary on that campus, the Berkeley Free Speech Movement.  I guess they don’t teach irony in college anymore.”

Maher also pointed to the fact that Reza Aslan has said Maher’s not a bigot, and wondered “what leg does this protest have to stand on?”

He concluded by asking the protesting students, “whoever told you [that] you only had to hear what didn’t upset you?”
