Robert Gates: 'I Had Looked into Putin's Eyes and I Saw a Stone-Cold Killer'

In an interview set to air on Hugh Hewitt’s radio show on Thursday, former Defense Secretary Robert Gates explained why Russian President Vladimir Putin isn’t good for his own country.

“You know, the truth is I think Putin is bad for Russia,” Gates said. “And I think right now it is the Russians that are paying the greatest cost for him being in power and he could potentially be president of Russia until 2024. And his refusal to open the country up politically, his refusal to encourage and provide predictability for foreign investment, his regard for all the natural resources – kind of an natural patrimony for not encouraging foreign investment there and frankly stealing from western companies by expropriating what they’ve invested – Russia just has a number of problems.”
