AUSTIN, Texas — Texas State Senator Dan Patrick is walking away with a statewide victory to become Lt. Governor-Elect. He soundly defeated his opponent, fellow State Senator Leticia Van de Putte who will return to her Senate seat for the session beginning in January. NBC has called a victory for State Senator Dan Patrick in the Texas Lt. Gov. race where Patrick was declared the winner with 59% of the vote, and Democratic opponent Van De Putte only received 39% of the vote.
Lt. Governor-elect Patrick ran a campaign on core Republican campaign issues that resonated well with the still very red state of Texas. First among those is Patrick’s pledge to secure the border. Patrick also campaigned on lowering property taxes, reducing the number of Democrat committee chairmanships, and making changes to the Texas Senate “Blocker Bill” tradition. Education, a long standing priority for the now Lt. Governor-elect will also take a center stage on the next legislative session.
Patrick defeated three opponents in the Republican Primary election including having to face the current Lt. Governor, David Dewhurst in a run-off election. Since that time, Patrick spent several months crisscrossing the state in a campaign that included one televised debate with Van de Putte.
