Moderation in the Pursuit of Debates Is No Virtue

Let’s not kid ourselves. The debates are all about the moderators. Just ask them. A successful performance may result in the chance to host a primetime news show with infinitesimal ratings. Failure means pretty much the same thing. So how will the moderators make it all about them? It’s tricky, as the candidates’ answers will take up much of their valuable time. Wendell Berry's Speech Reveals Washington's Disconnect

The broadcaster was referring to the White House Correspondents’ Association dinner held on April 28. A more telling and troubling example of this disconnect occurred earlier that week, when author Wendell E. Berry gave the 41st annual Jefferson Lecture for the Humanities. The April 23 speech, which you paid for through the National Endowment for the Humanities, showcased the Washington mindset at its most myopic and misguided. 15 May 2012
