One billion women will be beaten or raped in their lifetime

according to these folks.

The way to stop this? STRIKE, DANCE, RISE!

Stage a rising in your community, office, college, or school. Organize a flash mob at a landmark building/site, in the streets or in a nearby mall. Have a dance party, produce a theatrical event, march in your streets, protest, strike, dance and above all RISE!

Brought to you by everyone's favorite vagina owner and author Eve Ensler, Valentine's Day V(agina) Day is the day to "walk out" and demand an end to this violence. (Walk out from what? If you are getting beaten up or raped by someone you know, please get out now, do not wait to "walk out" for Valentine's Day. Seriously.)

If you live in New York City, there will be events all day long where you can take this meaningful and solution oriented action to stop women from getting beaten up and raped.

This Thursday, February 14, 2013, New York City will get out, stand up, and celebrate in a way it never has before. As part of One Billion Rising, a movement to end violence against women and girls spearheaded by Eve Ensler and her V-Day organization, New Yorkers in all five boroughs will join the 200 participating countries to strike, dance, and rise to demand an end to this kind of injustice. Join us, and help spark a new kind of revolution!

How participating in a "Macarena Flash Mob" in Union Square will stop violence against women is beyond me. Is there anyone who endorses violence against women that will take pause and reconsider when treated to this display? (Does anyone endorse violence against women other than its perpetrators?)

I'm just going to throw this out there and suggest that whatever money was raised for this superficial display might be better spent to set up some shelters/childcare or counselling for victims. How about teaching women some self-defense? How about helping women get back on their feet? Help them rebuild their life?

I guess not.
