Ammunition Shortages Reported

Gun dealers are reporting an ammuniton shortage. The reason: consumers are fearful of the potential gun control legislation coming down the road. Anyone who is gun owner looking to replenish their ammo supply has experienced this first hand. Even Wal-Mart is out of ammunition, much to my dismay. In particular, .22LR is hard to find.

“We absolutely are in uncharted territory,” said Larry Hyatt, of the family-owned Hyatt Gun Shop in Charlotte, N.C.. “Our store is 53 years old, and we have never seen anything like this. We have had some spot shortages and busy gun times in the past. This is a level (of demand) never before seen.”

There are further consequences of potential gun control legislation that reach beyond just ammunition supplies.  The U.S. Fish and Wild Life Service reported in December that hunting licenses were up 9%, reversing a decline over the previous years.  Even more importantly (to me) is that the National Skeet Shooting Association (NSSA) and National Sporting Clay Association (NSCA) reports that participation in the clay sports is growing 3-5% annually. (Of course, some of this sudden popularity might originate from that picture released by the White House of President “Bust em’ and Dust em” Obama smokin’ targets at Camp David. I kid, I kid…)
