Dick Harpootlian, the comically nasty dinosaur who headed up South Carolina’s Democrat Party until last Friday, doesn’t like Republican governor Nikki Haley very much. In fact, at the Democrat convention last year, he compared her to Hitler’s mistress, Eva Braun.
Then last Friday, speaking just before the Vice President at a Party function, Harpootlian expressed his wish that next year’s Democrat candidate for Governor would “send Nikki Haley back to wherever the hell she came from.”
Haley is the daughter of Indian immigrants. Harpootlian’s joke probably didn’t bother Vice President Biden much, since Biden has been known to joke about the large Indian-American population of his home state of Delaware, telling knee-slappers like, “You cannot go to a 7-11 or a Dunkin Donuts unless you have a slight Indian accent. I’m not joking.”
Of course, since Harpootlian and Biden have “D” after their names, these weren’t the career-electrocuting brushes with racism they would normally have been seen as.
The bumbling Harpootlian was nevertheless reduced to insisting that he meant that he wanted to send Haley the hell back to either Bamburg or Lexington, South Carolina, where she was respectively born, and resided before moving into the Governor’s estate.
Not even MSNBC hosts were willing to swallow that, so Harpootlian took one last stab at clearing the air: “All I’m suggesting is, she needs to go back to being an accountant in a dress store, rather than being this fraud of a governor that we have.” It’s a wonder he didn’t get any spittle on the MSNBC cameras, although I would imagine they’re fairly heavily spittle-proofed.
War on Women, anyone?
Newsbusters observed a rare sign of self-awareness from the MSNBC brain trust, as Mika Brzezinski – who actually stopped her co-host from mentioning Harpootlian’s racist remarks, assuring him “we don’t need to repeat it” – and Willie Geist cheerfully agreed they’d be “covering it like crazy” and running wall-to-wall coverage if a Republican said the same things.
More than that, MSNBC and the rest of the lib media would be hanging Harpootlian around the neck of the Republican candidate in the South Carolina special election like an anchor. Or an albatross. Or maybe an albatross holding a boat anchor. There would have been breathless 24/7 coverage demanding loud denunciations of Harpootlian, combined with hand-wringing about how the entire South Carolina Republican Party must be a toxic-waste dump to endure a racist, misogynist troll like him as its leader.
