Obama Calls For Role In Egypt For Group His Administration Doesn't Support
Fumble is right. The Regime's bizarre support for the "moderate" Islamist group (that is already making good on its promise to punish newly liberated Egyptians with terrorist atrocities for ousting Morsi) was always disgraceful but now it looks absolutely heinous.
Hence, we're seeing categorical denials that the Obama administration supports or is working with the Muslim Brotherhood.
“The United States categorically rejects the false claims propagated by some in Egypt that we are working with specific political parties or movements to dictate how Egypt’s transition should proceed,” the White House statement said. “We remain committed to the Egyptian people and their aspirations for democracy, economy opportunity and dignity. But the future path of Egypt can only be determined by the Egyptian people.”
Sec of State John Kerry read from the same script in a statement he made, yesterday; “we firmly reject the unfounded and false claims by some in Egypt that the United States supports the Egyptian Muslim Brotherhood or any specific Egyptian political party or movement.”
Fight the smears!
On the heels of Yachtgate, there's no certainly reason to doubt or mistrust any "firm" or "categorical" denials coming from this Regime, huh?
While the Obama administration claims its not supporting the Muslim Brotherhood, they are calling for an an “inclusive” political process in Egypt with a role for the Muslim Brotherhood, and urged the Egyptian military to stop using "heavy-handed tactics" against them.
As Tom Blumer noted at Newsbusters, there are a couple of tiny problems with the Regime's position, here.
The first is that now-deposed Mohammed Morsi's final speech on Tuesday was seen as a promise that there would be civil war if he were ousted. The second is that Morsi supporters in the Muslim Brotherhood and other Islamist groups have promised to carry out a campaign of terror until Morsi is reinstalled, and are keeping that promise. Those two factors should objectively disqualify the Brotherhood's involvement.
You would think.
But then, this is the administration that sent F-16 fighters, Abrams tanks and over a billion dollars of financial aid to Morsi’s Muslim Brotherhood-dominated government, earlier this year, despite his violent crackdown on dissidents and the deteriorating plight of women and Christians in Egypt.
Judging from this episode, an the ongoing nightmare in Syria, it takes an awful lot for terrorists to disqualify themselves from the Obama Administration's support.
