Police Warn Against Unexpected 'Morning DUI' Drivers
NEW YORK (CBS2) - Police are becoming increasingly concerned about a deadly new trend on city roads: the morning DUI. According to authorities, the growing number of these cases stems from the fact that people don't understand the way alcohol is processed within the body. A Patrol Officer, Allison Burstein said "A lot of people think, 'oh, just go and sleep it off a couple hours. I'll have something to eat and I'll be fine.'"
However, the time it takes alcohol to leave the body is directly related to one's size and weight and can often take hours.
According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, these incidents occur most frequently between the hours of 6 a.m to 9 a.m.
