On SNAP: Don’t hate the player, hate the game

In response to Just Look At The Person Ahead Of You In The Checkout Line:

While I agree with the sentiment, I think conservatives should focus on criticizing the programs and lack of accountability rather than on the people who use them.  I think the average American has family members or friends who might be SNAP users, but doesn’t see them being used in an irresponsible way.  It might be a similar phenomenon as the polls that show a majority of people who give Congress an unfavorable rating, but their own Congressman a favorable rating.  We tend to think better of the people we know.  Painting all SNAP users as irresponsible “slobs” doesn’t really endear conservatives to the people who really are hurting right now.  It also doesn’t do anything to offer solutions to the real problems with the program.
