6-year-old Accused of Attacking Police Officer After Attempting to Steal Bicycle

PITTSBURGH - Police officers detained three young juveniles on Friday for allegedly trying to steal bicycles in the Pittsburgh neighborhood of Troy Hill. When officers arrived at the 2000 block of Straubs Lane, they reportedly found two adults standing over three juveniles whom they accused of trying to steal bikes from their back yards.

That's when, according to a responding officer, one of the accused, later identified as 6-year-old Chalais Ramey, approached him, grabbed his gun with both hands and tried to remove it from the holster. Ramey admitted to a local reporter, "I tried to take the cop's gun."

Police said the officer then lifted the boy away from his body but Ramey began kicking and screaming while continuing to hold onto the gun. The officer eventually controlled the boy and placed him in the back of a patrol car.  According to the police report, the boy caused another commotion in the back of the car, lunging at the officer and then biting him after learning that his mother was on the way.

But the 6-year-old had his own account of what happened: “When I was in the back of the car I was kicking the window and he slammed me, and he put the handcuffs on me and he choked me, and that's when he put me back in the car,” said Ramey.

Ramey's mother, Lisa Miller added, “I'm not going to make excuses. It was not right for him to reach for the gun, but it was not right for a cop to do what he did to my son. He's only 6. He didn't have to do that."

A witness to the incident said, "I didn't see anything out of the ordinary. They weren't getting rough on him. The kid was only so big."

Ramey suffered some cuts on his face, but Cmdr. RaShall Brackney was "grateful that's all it was, was a bruise. As you can imagine, going for an officer’s gun, you could have resulted in a much more serious physical interaction with that young child.”

Ramey was examined at UPMC Children's Hospital and UPMC Western Psychiatric Institute.

He was with brothers, ages 5 and 10, when the incident occurred.
