In a state where ObamaCare is extremely unpopular, Senator Mary Landrieu (D-LA) doubled down on it, this weekend, saying that if she had to vote for the bill again, she would vote for it tomorrow. To add insult to injury, she also remarked that she’s “embarrassed” to go to places in Europe like France and Spain because not all Americans have health insurance.
“People are scared when they’re sick, and they’re much stronger when they’re well,” Landrieu said at a Friday lunch, according to the American Press. “It’s embarrassing to me to go to places like France and Spain … and their workers all manage to have health insurance that can’t be taken away.”
Governor Bobby Jindal reacted to her remarks on Twitter, saying her comment “is just another example that the left sees Obamacare as path to socialized medicine” which Senator Reid openly admitted to in a recent interview.
Her unfortunate remarks come as a new poll commissioned by the National Republic Senatorial Campaign finds voters in Louisiana overwhelmingly opposed to Obamacare.
In the survey of 600 voters, 62 percent say they oppose the health care law, including 53 percent who say they strongly oppose it. Only 33 percent support Obamacare.
Scott McKay at the Louisiana blog The Hayride quips that “this would seem to set up an uphill battle for her.”
Considering she’s already down by two in the Harper Polling/Conservative Intel survey released today and leading only 44-40 in the OnMessage poll Gov. Jindal’s team put out against Rep. Bill Cassidy, it wouldn’t appear that taking to the hustings to tout a vote which is roundly unpopular in the state is a good strategy.
But then again, maybe it’s the only strategy she has:
If she repudiates her Obamacare vote she’s admitting failure and infuriating the DC Democrat support she’s going to need if she’s going to have a big campaign war chest in this race. It’s not that doing so would win her any conservative support, anyway; not when she’s the last Democrat standing in a statewide elected position in Louisiana.
The GOP has been preparing for the 2014 midterms by taking swipes at ObamaCare in several key states, including Louisiana. Thanks to Landrieu’s recent faux pas, her seat is looking more vulnerable by the day.
