Another ObamaCare triumph: Cleveland Clinic downsizes
Reuters brings us the latest triumph from President Obama's health-care disaster, which is very good at creating government bureaucrats, but lousy at making insurance more affordable or available, and is wreaking horrible devastation upon medicine:
The world-renowned Cleveland Clinic said on Wednesday it would cut jobs and slash five to six percent of its $6 billion annual budget to prepare for President Barack Obama's health reforms.
The clinic, which has treated celebrities and world leaders such as musician Lou Reed, former Italian Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi and former Olympic gold medal skater Scott Hamilton, did not say how many of its 44,000 employees would be laid off. But a spokeswoman said that $330 million would be cut from its annual budget.
"Some of the initiatives include offering early retirement to 3,000 eligible employees, reducing operational costs, stricter review of filling vacant positions, and lastly workforce reductions," said Eileen Sheil, Executive Director of Corporate Communications for the Cleveland Clinic Foundation.
The largest employer in Cleveland, and second-largest in Ohio - a business that "accounts for nearly eight percent of the economic output of northeast Ohio - is going to lay off hundreds, perhaps thousands of people. A top research institute for cancer and Alzheimer's is going to slash its budget.
Great job voting for Obama, Ohioans! If you're thinking maybe you made a horrible mistake, this would be a good time to get 100 percent behind the ObamaCare defunding movement. Make it so popular that Senate Democrats get the shakes when they think about voting against it, Harry Reid becomes the most hated man in America, and Barack Obama starts wondering if that veto pen is as powerful as he thinks it is. You will not get another second chance.
