Yeah, except intransigent Democrats refuse to pass the smaller bills.
The latest proposal from House Republicans to re-open only certain parts of government failed Tuesday night as Democrats insisted they would not pick winners and losers among federal services, and the White House threatened a veto.
The latest Republican plan was to keep open national parks, veterans services and the District of Columbia, an approach modeled on recommendations of Sen. Ted Cruz (R-Texas), who has led the GOP’s strategy in the standoff that resulted in the first shutdown of the federal government in 17 years.
*Eric Cantor posted the above graphic on his Facebook page, and said, “this morning, the White House denied a group of visiting WWII veterans access to their own memorial. Now? House Democrats vote to block the Republican bill to ensure they could never do it again.”
The White House said Tuesday that Obama would veto any piecemeal bill that funded only parts of the federal government without resolving the whole government shutdown.
I’m with John – I like the piecemeal approach. But Obama sure doesn’t. How can he demagogue the issue into a political win for Democrats if we do something that’s actually good for the country?
“These piecemeal efforts are not serious, and they are no way to run a government,” [White House spokeswoman Amy Brundage] said. “If House Republicans are legitimately concerned about the impacts of a shutdown — which extend across government from our small businesses to women, children and seniors — they should do their job and pass a clean CR to reopen the government.”
Speaker Boehner’s office quickly reacted to the White House’s threat:
“How does the White House justify signing the troop funding bill, but vetoing similar measures for veterans, National Parks, and District of Columbia?” asked Boehner spokesman Michael Steel in a statement.
“The president can’t continue to complain about the impact of the government shutdown on veterans, visitors at National Parks, and D.C. while vetoing bills to help them,” he added. “The White House position is unsustainably hypocritical.”
I don’t want to state the obvious, but just to remove all doubt – Reid and Obama wanted this shutdown, okay? They think they can parlay this into huge political gains in 2014.
But after the incident, this morning in which the Regime specifically denied the WWII veterans a permit to visit the WWII Memorial, it’s looking to me like they’re going to overplay their hands just like they did with the Sequester. That backfired on Obama – his approval numbers actually went down in the midst of that, if you remember.
