McAuliffe, 'I Will Be a Brick Wall' for Abortion Advocates

During a campaign coffee social at George Mason University, Virginia gubernatorial candidate Terry McAuliffe was asked his stance on abortion and said, “I would support stopping any restrictions.”

McAuliffe, who has avoided explaining his position on abortion in the past did not shy away from the subject at the September 12th, event.

When asked if, “any anti-choice Republicans were to introduce legislation preventing[…]an abortion after 20 weeks,” and whether he would oppose the effort, the Democratic candidate said, “It is a constitutional right[…]I will be a brick wall to stop any erosion of any constitutional right that any woman has in Virginia.”

The Virginia governor hopeful was hosted by a George Mason University Democratic student organization.

Audio of the exchange was released by Women Speak Out Virginia PAC, an affiliated political action committee of the Susan B. Anthony List.

A Washington Post/ABC poll recently found that Americans by a 56 to 27 margin support restrictions on abortion after 20 weeks of pregnancy. A recent Quinnipiac poll also found that 55 percent of Americans support a limit on abortion after 20 weeks of pregnancy.

The most recent polling has Terry McAuliffe up by 7 points over his Republican opponent and Virginia Attorney General Ken Cuccinelli.

The McAuliffe campaign did not return calls for comment.
