NJ Votes for Higher Unemployment with Minimum Wage Increase

The Democrat-controlled New Jersey state legislature place a constitutional amendment on the ballot this year which would raise the state's minimum wage on Jan. 1 and then every year there after.

That was after trying to strike a deal with NJ Gov. Chris Christie on the issue. NJ will soon join California as a state with one of the nation's highest minimum wages. It is already ranked well up there in taxes.

Business owners say they'll be forced to lay off workers, cut employee hours or raise prices to compensate for having to pay a higher minimum wage. They also say they'll be hamstrung by the constitutional amendment if there is another economic recession.

The state's AFL-CIO union and Working Families United for New Jersey had backed the measure.
