White House spokesman Josh Earnest says the President is not dropping use of the term “Obamacare” even as a new Gallup survey that shows that the widely used moniker for the troubled health law polls seven points below the phrase “Affordable Care Act.”
“No, I think the president has taken on that — you know, that was a label
that was applied by our opponents and welcomed with open arms by this
president and our allies” Earnest told reporters Thursday.
The question arose after a new Gallup survey published Wednesday found that dropping “Obamacare” might be a good PR move for the administration.
Gallup asked respondents to rate their approval-disapproval of the law using four questions with slight shifts in wording. When people are asked what they think of the “Affordable Care Act” 45 percent approve and 49 percent disapprove. However when the same question is asked substituting the world “Obamacare” the results are 38-54, 12 points worse.
Despite the official denial from the White House, a video produced by the Washington Free Beacon seems
to show the President has returned to “Affordable Care Act” as
the moniker of choice for his troubled health care law. The site noted that during his recent press conference “Obama referred to his law as the Affordable Care Act 12 times but did not say ‘Obamacare’ once.”
